Ceramics in fuel pumps and oil pumps

Ceramic components are used in fuel and oil pumps to reliably cope with extreme pressures, abrasive media, and high temperatures. They replace or supplement metal parts in demanding systems and ensure precise volume flows, long service life, and minimal maintenance.

Typical applications include high-pressure fuel pumps (e.g., common rail systems) as pistons, sleeves, or valve seats, as well as oil pumps as bearings, shafts, or sliding elements for lubrication and cooling at speeds of up to 100,000 rpm. They are also used in hydraulic and lubrication pumps for production plants and in high-pressure systems for alternative fuels such as biodiesel or hydrogen.

Advantages at a glance

Compared to metal or plastic-based variants, ceramic parts offer a unique combination of mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties that minimize failures and increase efficiency. The main advantages are:

Wear and abrasion resistance:

Hardness >1,800 HV, resists particle abrasion and cavitation; service life up to 10 times longer than metal.

Corrosion resistance and safety:

Resistant to fuels, oils, acids, and salts; non-metallic, prevents rust and sparking in sensitive areas.

Thermal stability and precision:

Operational up to 1,200°C, low thermal expansion; precise dosing and energy savings thanks to low friction coefficient (<0.1).

Lightness and hygiene:

Density ~3.8 g/cm³, non-porous and inert; saves space, reduces weight, and prevents particle release into sensitive systems.
